Day Counter: Count Days Between Dates or Add Days to Any Date

A day counter calculates the number of days between two dates, or finds the date that results from adding or subtracting a number of calendar or business days. From June 1 to July 4, 2026 (Independence Day) = 33 days, including 23 weekdays and 10 weekend days. 30 business days from June 1 = July 13, 2026.

Formula: Days = (End − Start) / 86,400,000 ms  |  Business days: iterate and count Mon–Fri only

Use caseModeExample
Days until eventBetween datesToday → Christmas
Project deadlineAdd business daysStart + 20 business days
Days since eventBetween datesPast date → today

Day counters are used for project management (deadline calculation), legal and financial contracts (net payment terms), personal milestones (anniversaries, countdowns), and scheduling. The key distinction is whether to count all 7 days per week or only the 5 business days.

Calendar Days vs Business Days

Calendar days count every day of the week. Business days (also called working days) count only Monday through Friday. For a result 30 calendar days from June 1 = July 1. For 30 business days = July 13 (skipping 8–9 weekend days). Contracts and official timelines often specify which type is meant — "Net 30" in US invoicing means 30 calendar days; a "30-day response requirement" in legal contexts often means 30 calendar days unless specified otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I count the number of days between two dates?

Subtract the earlier date from the later date. In everyday terms: count each calendar day from the start date up to but not including the end date (this gives the elapsed days). To include the end date, add 1. Example: June 1 to June 30 = 29 days not including June 30; = 30 days including June 30. In spreadsheets: =DATEDIF(start, end, "D") or simply =end-start for the difference in days. In JavaScript: Math.round((endDate - startDate) / 86400000) gives the number of whole calendar days.

What date is 30 days from today?

To find the date 30 calendar days from today, enter today's date as the start and 30 as the number of days in "Add days" mode. For business days, select "Business days only" to skip weekends. Quick reference: 30 calendar days from the 1st of any month is roughly the 31st of the same month (or 1st of next month). 30 business days ≈ 6 calendar weeks. 90 calendar days ≈ 3 months. 90 business days ≈ 18 weeks (4.5 months).

How many days are in a year?

A common year has 365 days. A leap year (divisible by 4, with exceptions for century years) has 366 days. A leap year occurs in 2024, 2028, 2032, etc. The average year is 365.2425 days due to the Gregorian calendar's leap year rules. For month counting: a tropical year (one orbit of Earth around the Sun) is 365.2422 days. For practical date arithmetic, use 365 for common years and 366 for leap years (2024, 2028 are leap years; 2026 is not).

How many weekdays are in a year?

A year with 52 complete weeks has exactly 52 × 5 = 260 weekdays. But years have either 365 or 366 days, leaving 1 or 2 extra days beyond the 52 complete weeks. Those extra days fall on specific weekdays depending on what day January 1 falls: a non-leap year starting on Thursday has 261 weekdays (the extra day is Thursday); 2026 starts on a Thursday and has 261 weekdays. Before holidays: the US has 261 weekdays in 2026. After subtracting 10 federal holidays, approximately 251 net working days.
